Pier Journal, our excellent local culture magazine down here in Dorset, commissioned an article from me recently. Their Spring/Summer edition is titled ‘movement’, so is a natural fit with my practice.

Pier celebrate the local and we have a lot of exciting things happening here – from nature to culture, and the precious intersection inbetween. I strive for my work to fit neatly into that middle gap.

It was great to see the care and trouble that went into the magazine’s production. Nice layout and I love the full bleed images. There was even a launch party at Lush HQ to mark the new edition’s release – fun (and perfumed).

The stunning cover artwork was created by local illustrator Natasha Robinson. At the party Pier had their cover art options as posters for all to see. It was fascinating to view different illustrators’ interpretations of ‘movement’.

I concentrated on photographs I had created locally from the forest to the coast. (Credits to Kitty Williams and Lewis Walker of Richmond Gymnastics Association and Birds of Poole Harbour).

In the article itself I wrote about the different worlds my movement photography takes me into (from human movement, with athletes and dancers, to movement in nature) and those world’s particular relationship to movement.
